Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water is a company focused on sustainability, charity, and health. Waiakea Water is so much more than just a premium bottled water that has won taste awards, they are proud to be the greenest water bottling company on the planet too. Despite the incredible success of Waiakea Water since its inception in 2012, the company feels a moral obligation to give back far more than they take in.
Waiakea Inc. does not only promote drinking healthy, drinking sustainability, and drinking ethically, they are proud to live by those words every day.
The History of the Waiakea Water Brand
It was only in 2012 that Waiakea Water was introduced to the world, and the company has shown in that short time that they are more than their sleek shaped water bottle and unique purification process. Right out of the gate, Waiakea Water garnished attention because they went above and beyond to separate themselves from the hundreds of other water bottling companies across the world. Since day one, Waiakea Inc. has been about charity, sustainability, and healthier choices. Utilizing the purest environments to harness pure volcanic water, the aquifer is capable of filtering millions of gallons of water each day through 14,000 feet of porous lava, further enhanced with electrolytes and minerals to make it naturally delicious. Where the company gets most attention is surprisingly not the water, but the bottle itself.
The Water Bottle of the Future
The water bottles that Waiakea Inc. used from the beginning certainly stood out. Their sleek design, unique color, and more importantly, material composition. These are not your average plastic water bottles. From the first day of production, Waiakea Water was the first bottled water company to be awarded the carbon neutral certification and be recognized as an industry leader in sustainability through its many initiatives. The water bottles being produced over the last five years were all 100% RPET, meaning they were comprised of recyclable materials. These plastic water bottles required 85 percent less energy to produce, and were able to reduce carbon emissions by 90%. Even further, the Waiakea Water plastic bottles were also BPA free.
Expanding on the Success of the Brand
Most companies who see the type of immediate success that Waiakea Water has seen, would be quick to try and capitalize financially as much as possible. While it is true Waiakea Water has doubled their distribution centers in only a few years, where they continue to shine is in their charitable efforts. Each time one bottle of Waiakea Water is sold, the company then donates a weeks supply of water to families in need of clean water. Many would be surprised to hear that millions of people around the world do not have any access to a clean water source, and that babies are dying every day because of water-born illnesses. Through humanitarian efforts working with PumpAid, Waiakea Water’s mission is to donate clean water to developing nations every day.
Waiakea Water Recognizes Their Moral Responsibility
According to the CEO of Waiakea Water, Ryan Emmons, his company can not in good conscience enjoy the success that comes with selling purified volcanic water knowing millions around the world are being deprived of the most basic of all human needs. Waiakea Water has teamed with Keiki Steps and Kama’aha Foundation to help locals who are suffering, and is currently involved in numerous global social initiatives to give back to communities in desperate need. The company has created a fund that will invest revenues and employees time through various non-profit projects all in an effort to get help to those who are unable to get access to clean water. Part of the moral responsibility of selling bottled water includes preserving the limited natural resources of the planet, something Waiakea Water has been at the forefront of since day one.
The Reasons for Developing a Better Plastic Bottle
Despite the plastic bottles being produced by Waiakea Water being the greenest in an industry, the company has been working hard to take the next logical step to a better plastic bottle. Over five years of experiments and testing with their partner TimePlast, Waiakea Water is proud to announce the launch of the very first 100 percent degradable and recyclable plastic water bottle. This bottle will not look any different that the sleek bottle designs already in use, but Mother Earth and future generations will certainly see a difference. The patented additive being used in the plastic bottles will degrade 97 percent faster than the traditional plastic bottle, which basically means instead of plastic bottles in local landfills for 1,500 years, the new Waiakea Water bottles will degrade in only 15 years.
Continuing Efforts to Better the Planet
Although Waiakea Water is leading the way with a fully degradable plastic water bottle, donating clean water to those in need, and teaching the importance of sustainability to the masses, Emmons says his company is also leading the way in another area. Waiakea Water is committed to significantly decreasing their ecological footprint so future generations can enjoy the natural resources of this planet. The development of a plastic water bottle that has only a 2 percent lifespan of a traditional water bottle is a start but Emmons hopes other plastic bottling companies will follow his lead. The company as a whole hopes to inspire other manufacturers to utilize this new technology to change the world, especially given the incredible commercial advantages. Since one pound of the plastic additive can alter a thousand pounds of plastic raw materials, any plastic bottling company can easily absorb the new application while changing the world.
Waiakea Water could have enjoyed the latest success of being one of the fastest growing companies of 2017 and raked in the profits, but donating water, time, and information to those is need is where the company really shines. The more recognition the company receives, the more they donate of themselves. The hope of the company is to significantly reduce the amount of people in the world who are being deprived of the most basic of all human needs, clean drinking water.
