Seven Tips to Help Your Hair Color Last Longer

Many of us spend a great deal of money and time to get our hair the color we want it to be. Yet the color often fades before we really have a chance to enjoy it. Fortunately, there are numerous things you can do to help your hair color last longer.

Turn Down the Heat in Your Shower: Hot showers feel great at the end of a long day, but hot water opens up your hair cuticles and releases your hair dye. Instead, try shampooing and rinsing your hair with room-temperature water. Then, towel dry it. Condition your hair. Then, rinse it out with the coldest water you can stand to seal your hair cuticles. Doing this will help you keep your hair color longer.

Shampoo Less Frequently: Shampooing less often will help your hair color last longer as well. If you can, shampoo your hair two or three times a week. If your hair gets too greasy, try washing it every other day instead of daily.

Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo: Shampoos containing sulfates can cause your hair color to fade quicker. Use a shampoo for color-treated hair that doesn’t contain sulfates. These shampoos are gentler than regular shampoos and give extra moisture to your hair.

Avoid Hot Hair Styling Tools: As mentioned previously in this article, heat opens up your hair cuticles and causes your hair color to fade more quickly. For at least the first week after you color your hair, avoid using hot hair styling tools, such as hair dryers, curling irons, and hair straighteners. Instead, go for a look that doesn’t require any hot hair styling tools to perfect.

Use a Shower Filter: Chemicals like chlorine make tap water safe to drink, but they can also strip your hair color. Try using a shower filter that filters out chlorine, chemicals, and minerals.

Deep Condition: Use a deep conditioning mask on your hair once a week. Deep conditioning masks will help hydrate your hair, which helps keep your color from fading as fast.

Clarifying Shampoo: A day or two before you color your hair, use a clarifying shampoo to remove styling product buildup from your hair.

When you color your hair, you want the color to last as long as possible. Using these tips will help keep your hair color from fading as fast.
